The MSCThe Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an independent, global, non-profit organisation established in 1997 by the World Wildlife Fund, the International Conservation Organisation and major food companies. It works to ensure fish stocks are responsibly managed for the future and only awards its eco label to those fisheries that have achieved certification to its stringent sustainability standards. John West has a close affiliation with the MSC and is a strong supporter of the MSC’s mission to encourage and promote responsible, sustainable fishing practices globally. As a result, all John West Red and Pink Salmon products canned in Alaska carry the MSC certification. |

Dolphin FriendlyJohn West is committed to ensuring the fishing methods used to catch our tuna abide by international standards to minimise the impact to the marine environment and this includes Dolphin friendly practices. Standards for dolphin safe practices were developed by the Earth Island Institute in the early 1970’s. The Earth Island Institute is an independent non-government organisation based in the USA that monitors fishing practices worldwide. In order for your product to bear the ‘Dolphin Friendly’ symbol, the fishing vessels that catch your tuna must be certified by the Earth Island Institute. |
Sustainable TunaAt John West, we recognise our responsibility to protect the environment. That’s why we are committed to sourcing tuna from sustainable fish stocks. Our reputable suppliers comply with our strict guidelines and ensure the fishing methods used to catch our tuna abide by international standards. John West only sources its tuna from fishing vessels that have been certified Dolphin Friendly by the Earth Island Institute. We use the Purse Seine fishing method to catch tuna for our canned products and have full traceability of the fish used. Our tuna products are labelled in accordance with the Australian and New Zealand Foods Standards Code. We use Skipjack for more than 90% of our tuna products, with the remaining products using Tongal. We do not use Yellowfin, Bigeye or Southern Blue Fin. All of our tuna is sourced from the Indian and Western and Central Pacific oceans. We also work with independent organisations and suppliers to raise awareness of our sustainability protocol. John West encourages responsible fishing practices globally and is supportive of initiatives that encourage sound management of tuna resources now and into the future. |
